A new report from Global Market Insights says the in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) market is expected to reach $8.5bn by 2024, growing at 13.3% CAGR from 2016.

It says the need for increasing “passenger travel time experience”, development of innovative wireless solutions for “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) platforms and growing availability of HD content are anticipated to drive industry demand.

The technology includes moving map systems, audio and video entertainment, personal televisions and in-flight movies.

It adds the launch of high-throughput [Ka and Ku-band] satellites (HTS) has enabled added inflight connectivity and the rising prominence of digital advertising, as well as free Wi-Fi services, is predicted to propel the market size.

But it warns the huge investments associated with the technology, stringent regulatory framework by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), and high installation costs may hamper growth.

It says the U.S. in-flight entertainment and connectivity market will remain a major regional segment through the forecast timeline, due to improved high speed broadband support infrastructure, and growing data usage.

Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness rapid growth due to rising consumer living standards and growing air travel frequency.
