SmartSky Networks logoDragonWave, the Ottawa-based supplier of packet microwave radio systems, says it has received a product supply and installation services contract from SmartSky Networks, the North American 4G LTE inflight service provider.

Details of the contract were not disclosed, but DragonWave said that SmartSky will deploy its Harmony Enhanced and Harmony Enhanced MC products to provide high-capacity backhaul for its ground-to-air 4G LTE network, which should promise seamless inflight connectivity.

This technology will enable connectivity on most airlines. SmartSky says it was formed in 2011 by senior aviation and telecommunications executives seeking to transform aviation using disruptive communications technologies.

Working with leading aerospace and technology partners, the company is beginning the rollout of its innovative, air-to-ground 4G LTE network later this year.

In March, the company said it had secured more than $170 million in a multi-tranche Series B financing, completing the equity funding for the deployment of its nationwide network.

The 4G LTE network will deliver data to the aircraft with speeds comparable to next-generation satellite solutions and provide “unmatched” speeds when getting data off the aircraft.

The company says a real-time bidirectional link between the aircraft and ground, without the latency of satellite systems, means SmartSky 4G LTE is a key enabler for new and enhanced apps, services, and hardware.
