Inmarsat has been crowned the ‘World’s Leading Inflight Internet Service Provider’ at the World Travel Awards 2017 in Phu Quoc, Vietnam.
It follows a comprehensive online voting process, with participation from thousands of travel and tourism executives across the world, in addition to specialist consumer travel buyers.
Inmarsat claims its new inflight connectivity solutions have the fastest uptake in the market, with more than 1,300 commercial aircraft expected under signed contracts for GX Aviation and the European Aviation Network (EAN). (Note: Gogo says it has more than 2,000 commitments for its 2Ku solution.)
Inmarsat says both of these solutions are introducing a new gold standard in global and regional inflight Wi-Fi, allowing airline passengers to seamlessly browse the internet, stream videos, check social media and more during flights, with an onboard connectivity experience that is comparable to the mobile broadband services they may receive on the ground.
Early adopters of GX Aviation and EAN include leading airlines such as Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand, IAG, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines, Norwegian, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Avianca.
The award was also good news for Honeywell Aerospace, which provides the JetWave antenna and hardware for the GX Aviation installations.
Phil Balaam, President of Inmarsat Aviation, said: “Receiving the World Travel Award, one of the most prestigious accolades in travel and tourism, is the latest industry recognition attesting the quality of our inflight connectivity offering.
“Passengers clearly want a step up from unreliable and expensive inflight WiFi.
“With our global GX Aviation service already in commercial service, and our pan-European offering, the European Aviation Network, starting the final phase of operational launch by the end of 2017, our progress in the market shows no sign of slowing.
“As more and more airlines go live with our connectivity services, we’re looking forward to seeing passengers experiencing Inmarsat’s award-winning broadband in the sky.”
Graham E Cooke, Founder and President of the World Travel Awards, said: “A well-deserved congratulations to Inmarsat on their success at the World Travel Awards Grand Final 2017.
“World’s Leading Inflight Internet Service Provider is a prestigious international award that places Inmarsat firmly at the top of the travel and tourism industry.
“I hope their recognition, both by their peers and members of the public, will inspire them to aim ever higher in the pursuit of excellence.”
The World Travel Award adds to a growing number of international accolades for Inmarsat’s inflight Wi-Fi services this year.
These include the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) ‘Best Inflight Connectivity Innovation Award’ for EAN, the Inflight Magazine Asia Pacific ‘Connectivity Enablement Award’ for GX Aviation, and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) ‘Product Innovation Award’ for GX Aviation.
In addition, Inmarsat Aviation won ‘Best B2B Marketing’ at the DMA Awards, ‘Best Live Event Marketing’ at the B2B Marketing Awards, and ‘Best Use of Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality’ at the DMA International ECHO Awards.
