AMAC Aerospace has admitted two Airbus ACJ aircraft to its headquarters in Basel, Switzerland for Ka-band inflight connectivity installations.

The first is an Airbus A319 that was also due a six-year inspection maintenance check and the Ka-band installation.

A Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) is being developed in-house by AMAC’s engineering department and is expected to be made available to the market to all ACJ operators by mid March, 2018.

AMAC has also developed the STC for a Ka-band installation on a head of state A330-200 aircraft.

Although AMAC’s press release didn’t specified what system was being fitted, photographs show that it is an Inmarsat Jet ConneX (JX) installation, using the Honeywell MCS-8000 fuselage-mounted antenna.

This is the same antenna used by commercial airlines for Inmarsat’s GX Aviation inflight connectivity service. It is capable of delivering up to 30-50Mbps, depending upon the contract chosen. The Jet ConneX business aviation contracts tend to top out at 15Mbps.

The increased data speeds enables business jet users greater access to the internet, TV and video streaming across multiple on-board devices.

It also supports uninterrupted Wi-Fi, email, web-browsing, video conferencing, data file transfers, and voice and text capabilities.

“Get Connected” first reported that AMAC was developing an STC for the A330 in September 2017.

Gunnar Jancke, Director Design Organisation and Quality Assurance at AMAC Aerospace, said then: “This STC covering the JetWave Ka-band antenna installation on an Airbus A330-200 has been developed as a Multiple STC so that it can be installed on other Airbus A330 aircraft to meet the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity on board large VIP aircraft.”

AMAC Aerospace offers narrow- and wide-body VIP completion and maintenance for the corporate/private aviation market. The company was founded in 2007 in Basel, Switzerland and says it is the largest privately-owned facility in the world.
