Honeywell is using inflight connectivity to reduce the cost of flying using its “GoDirect” portfolio of services.

“When they look at the overall cost, passenger connectivity isn’t really a profitable cost centre. But at Honeywell we have developed a number of different services called Honeywell GoDirect.”
GoDirect is Honeywell’s portfolio of more than 50 aviation services and applications that provide operators, flight crews and maintenance teams with critical information to manage their services and network efficiently.
“Engines generate data, hydraulic systems generate data, so if you have the ability to get that data off the aircraft in a timely manner you could save money,” Peterson said.
“If you can eliminate delays and cancellations it completely transforms your cost centres into higher profit centres.”
The system can flag potential maintenance failures before they happen using GoDirect Connected Maintenance (an analytics solution). It can do this with 99 per cent accuracy to keep aircraft flying, avoiding downtime, and proactively reducing delays by up to 35 per cent.
Go Direct Flight Efficiency combines its flight data analytics platform with its growing suite of trajectory optimisation tools to unlock savings using data-driven decision-making.
It brings together all flight variables in one place, including flight plans, weather, navigation charts, aircraft performance and more to give customers a comprehensive look at fleet and environment data, to lock in flight schedules, to increase efficiencies and to reduce costs.
“We have really migrated into becoming a software company,” he said. “That’s where a lot of our money is invested. We probably best in class at doing that.
“We have divided up the data into this is the type of stuff you need to know right now, this is the kind of stuff you need to know weekly, and this data you may never need to know.
“We’ve joined up hundreds of Terrabytes of data so that we know do you need to change the filter on the ECS system right now? That’s where Honeywell has got ahead,” Peterson said.
Honeywell says it has focused on fuel savings and flight efficiency.
Its flight data analytics platform is used by more than 30 customers across the globe, managing more than 2,300 aircraft every day. Customers already have used the analytics tool and vertical optimisation app to save thousands of tons of fuel.
“No one has got a larger collection of algorithms and solutions right now,” Peterson concluded.
